The Maria Carrillo High School Jazz Choir has a 20+ year tradition of singing A Cappella vocal jazz and pop music for the community and beyond. They have represented the City of Santa Rosa at our Sister City in Jeju, South Korea four times. They have also sung at various venues in New York City including Carnegie Hall. They have sung the National Anthem at Levi’s Stadium and AT&T Park. They compete at several Jazz festivals throughout the year and they sing 15 – 20 performances in the month of December, which helps pay for the traveling and competitions that they participate in. This group rehearses every morning at 7:00 AM.
They are under the direction of Gail Bowers, a native of North Dakota. Gail has been teaching for 31 years and loves creating music with all four choirs at MCHS. Gail was nominated for Educator of the year by her peers in 2004, 2011 and 2017, as Choral Educator of the Year by the Bay Area California Music Educators Association in 2006 and as Music Director of the year by the Northern California Band and Choral Director’s Association in 2012. She was most recently awarded the California State 2018 CMEA Choral Educator of the Year Award. Gail is an adjudicator for CMEA Bay Section festivals as well as a clinician at various CMEA and ACDA Conferences.
